Greetings, Earthlings
A brief(?!) introduction. I live in the UK (but wish I didn't!), and I'm the wrong side of 55 years old. I started listening to electronic music around 30 years ago now. We have a radio show over here called 'The Essential Mix' and I would tune-in every saturday to hear what the guest DJs were playing. It was Paul Oakenfold's 'Goa Mix' that really grabbed my attention, and led to a long love affair with psy-trance and what would now be called, "old school" trance. Last year I started listening to more techno and just recently, electro too.
Soooo, it was this interest in EDM that made me want to have a go at making tracks myself. In 1995, I decided to buy my first synth. I actually wanted a Quasimidi 'Raven' but in the end, had to make do with a Yamaha 'CS1x'

My next purchase was an Atari 1040st computer. This combined with a hacked copy of Cubase V2 on a floppy disk, was my DAW... many of the top producers at the time were using the same set-up. It was a steep learning curve and I wasn't online back then, so had no access to youtube tutorials e.t.c. I only managed to write one track worthy of release before life went pear-shaped following a death in the family. My hardware set-up has been in storage ever since but I have added a couple of items; a little Yamaha SU10 sampler and an E-MU 'Xtreme Lead' synth module.... nice to have if I'm ever able to create a small studio space.
That brings me up to the here and now; kinda. In 2021, I had a look around on the web to see what options were available for making music. I played around with 'Audiotool' for a while but didn't much like it for writing... some of the sounds were cool though. Next, I tried Beepbox which is used mostly by folks wanting to re-create chiptune melodies like those used in old school computer games. I then moved over to another version of Beepbox known as Jummbox which allowed for tracks of 6+ minutes in length. It was okay I guess, I tried to write some tunes but never felt very inspired as even after tweaking the settings, the sounds and effects were very basic. I heard about and then downloaded LMMS and was blown-away by the standard presets, samples and effects.
So there you go!, fingers-crossed I can realise my dream of making an album with this DAW. Having said that, arranging is a BIG weak point for me; so as well as learning how LMMS works, I also need to work hard on that.
Cheers... 4OTF out
